Smith downed in men's singles final

The Fresno Pacific women's doubles team of seniors Katia Sabate and Vanessa Heroux won the Fresno City Open women's doubles tennis championship on Monday.
Sabate/Heroux defeated the Fresno State tandem of Anastasia Petukhova/Olga Kirpicheva, 6-3, 6-3. Petukhova is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA with her regular partner Renata Kucerkova.
Sunbirds sophomore Xavier Smith lost in the men's singles final, 6-3, 6-4 to former Fresno State No. 1 player Rudy Siwy.
Fresno Pacific begins practice today for the fall season. The Sunbirds will host an NAIA regional Sept. 24-26.
The Sunbirds men are defending national champions, and the women were NAIA runner-up last spring.
