Sunbird is defending champion

Fresno Pacific sophomore Xavier Smith will play for the championship of the Fresno City Open tennis tournament Sunday morning at Sierra Sport & Racquet Club.
Smith, from Visalia, defeated David Ayoun of Fresno State in the semifinals, 6-7, 6-2, 6-0.
On Sunday's 10 a.m. final he will face Rusy Siwy, a former Fresno State No. 1 player.
Smith won the Fresno City championship last year, then was recruited to Fresno Pacific by coach Neil Castro. The Sacramento State transfer joins a Sunbirds team that won the NAIA national title in the spring.
The Sunbirds duo of Katia Sabate and Vanessa Heroux will play for the women's doubles title.
